Welcome to Fika's first shiny new blog entry. We promise to keep these short & sweet and informative...all being well and us having had the pre requisite amount of sleep and good coffee.
In case you're not already not aware, we are a Scandinavian cafe in the heart of Oakham, attempting to bring something of a new take on coffee and cake to the good people of Rutland. We live and breathe all things Scandinavian and we even choose to remove the subtitles on Wallander just to see how much of the plot we can follow. That lasts about 47 seconds.
Fika is all about bringing the cultural phenomenon of halting your day, whatever your age and whenever you are to have a flipping good coffee and, if the fancy takes you, something sweet on the side. The Swedes carry out this ritual on a daily basis and their expectation is that good coffee is a given and that the kanalbulle (cinnamon buns) will be drop dead gorgeous. Or else. We felt that when out for coffee in the UK it can be, well, sketchy at times and so if you we could translate the Swedish importance for a Fikapause (yes literally pause for Fika) then we could offer consistency and deliciousness into Rutlander's everyday lives, too.
In addition, and no less importantly, we wanted to create a space that felt welcoming, Scandinavian in appearance and a little bit cosier and special than the norm. Having lived in Stockholm for a period of time, we were really inspired by their clean lines, sheep skins and awesome lighting...and the odd splash of a carefully selected shade of white paint...
To complete this experience, we have a collection of Homeware, hand picked from Scandinavian based suppliers, some of whom you won't find elsewhere in the UK.
